Valentine’s Day Cake = Cool Mom Status

I love Valentine’s Day. Like I really love it. So the caffeinated & motivated version of myself decided to try & make an ombré cake with the kids today! We did it and it was delicious! Here’s what to do and what not to do based on our mistakes!

Grab white cake mix & follow instructions to make batter (or make from scratch if you’re SUPER motivated)! Divide it into 3 or 4 smaller dishes and put in pink food coloring! I started it by measuring out drops, but ended up just doing it by trial & error! Make a dark, medium, light and super light pink!

Bake each color cake in a small 8″ circular pan & cool! (We also made mini cupcakes with a second box of cake mix because I had big ideas…and those ideas were put on the back burner real quick)!

This is where it gets messy…I attempted to cut the browned edges off the cakes and it turned into a crumbled mess! Despite our mess we layered cake, frosting, cake, frosting, etc…all the way to the top!

…and it was a bit of a disaster, but a delicious disaster! So what can solve this? More frosting! I used the edge of a pastry cutter and smoothed frosting all around the sides! It turned into a crumbly, frosting blob, but cute enough for some sprinkles & my fabulous Glambanners cake topper!

My boys were SO excited to see it finished on their mini kitchen when they waked in the room and when we cut into it they laughed so hard! So despite the mess that is my kitchen I got some smiles from my kids and #coolmom status…that is until I try to make them eat dinner tonight!

If I were to do it again, I would use one bowl for food coloring! Start with your lightest color and work your way up! Less mess and easier to judge the change in color!

I would also refrigerate the cakes before cutting next time so they don’t crumble as much, but patience isn’t in my vocabulary!

And lastly, if I were to do it over I would just buy one from the bakery! 😉 …just kidding! It was worth the memories!

*Please note, I’m just a regular mom trying to be cool! I am in no way a professional baker so take my advice with a grain of salt!

Enjoy!
